About Dharwad
Dharwad is a district headquarters known for its excellent climate throughout the year, with mildly hot summers and occasional thunderstorms. It is located in a geographically pristine area where the Western Ghats meet the plains. The word "Dharwad" is derived from the Sanskrit word "Dwarawata," with "Dwara" meaning door and "wada" meaning town. Hence, it is also called the gateway town.
The region is also known for its rich heritage and exceptional educational institutions, including Karnataka University, Agricultural University, IIT, IIIT, KMCRI, SDM group of Institute and KLE group of Institute. It is home to many lakes, to name a few Sadhankeri, Kelgeri, Navalur, and Nuggikeri. Karnataka University’s Botanical Garden is a sanctuary for many plants, trees, and birds. Dharwad is famous for its contributions to Indian classical music and Kannada literature. Many prominent figures such as Shri. Bendre, Shri Girish Karnad, Shri. Bhimsen Joshi, and Smt. Gangubai Hangal belong to the undivided district of Dharwad, which also includes Haveri and Gadag. People who visit Dharwad do not go home empty-handed; instead carry with them the famous 'Dharwad Peda,' a local delicacy that has obtained the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
